Eco-Friendly Packaging: Sustainable Materials & Solutions
“Eco-friendly” is a broad description, not a performance standard or a guarantee that a package has a lower impact. No single packaging material is the most responsible choice for every cannabis product. Evaluate the complete package using product compatibility, required performance, documented material attributes, customization, transportation, and available end-of-life pathways.
How to Evaluate Packaging Materials
Start with the exact container, closure, liner, label, adhesive, tamper-evident component, and outer packaging. Material choice does not determine regulatory compliance. Child resistance applies to a tested or certified product-and-closure configuration, resealability depends on the package design, and tamper evidence requires a separate documented feature.
Plant-Based Hemp Packaging
Sana Packaging’s documented molded hemp material is approximately 70% plant-derived PLA and 30% micronized hemp hurd with biobased binders. It is 100% plant-based and petroleum-free, but it is not pure hemp, plastic-free, or certified compostable.
Sana Packaging uses this material for selected pre-roll tubes, vape packaging, and the Sana Hemp Container. Product compatibility, performance, and current specifications should be confirmed for the exact item and application.
Reclaimed and Recycled Plastics
Reclaimed ocean-bound plastic and post-consumer recycled plastic describe material sourcing or recycled content. They do not establish that a finished package will be accepted or recycled after use. Resin type, package format, attached components, residue, and local collection and processing infrastructure all affect the available end-of-life pathway.
A resin identification code identifies the material; it does not guarantee recyclability. Review current product specifications for the exact resin, recycled-content claim, closure, and finished configuration.
Recycled Glass and Paperboard
Sana Packaging’s applicable recycled glass jars contain approximately 50% to 70% recycled glass, depending on the product. Weight, breakage, closures, transportation, and local recycling infrastructure affect the complete packaging system.
Sana Packaging’s standard hemp paperboard for qualifying outer-packaging projects generally contains approximately 25% hemp fiber and 75% post-consumer recycled paper. That composition applies to the paperboard component. It does not establish that the finished package is recyclable, biodegradable, compostable, or preferable for every application.
Customization and End-of-Life Claims
Printing, labels, inks, adhesives, coatings, and laminations should be evaluated separately. Environmental claims should be limited to documented attributes of the exact materials used. Disposal instructions should reflect the finished package and the collection or processing options available where it is sold.
Choose the Complete Packaging System
Compare the exact package requirements and documented attributes of each component, request production-representative samples when needed, and confirm current compliance, lead time, and end-of-life information before production.
