Eco Design: Elevate Cannabis Packaging Sustainably with Sana Packaging

Eco design is a process for evaluating tradeoffs across a package’s complete lifecycle. It does not make one material, product, or sourcing model universally preferable. A useful review considers product protection, regulatory requirements, documented material attributes, manufacturing and transportation, customization, and available recovery or disposal infrastructure.

Start With the Complete Packaging Configuration

Map the primary container, closure, liner, label, adhesive, tamper-evident component, insert, and outer packaging. Each component may use a different material, supplier, manufacturing location, and end-of-life pathway.

Child resistance, tamper evidence, product-contact suitability, barrier performance, and filling compatibility should be confirmed separately for the exact finished configuration.

Use Documented Material Attributes

Plant-based, reclaimed, and recycled materials are distinct options. Their names do not automatically establish lower energy use, fewer greenhouse-gas emissions, less waste, recyclability, compostability, or a circular outcome.

Sana Packaging’s documented molded hemp material is approximately 70% plant-derived PLA and 30% micronized hemp hurd with biobased binders. It is 100% plant-based and petroleum-free, but it is not pure hemp, plastic-free, or certified compostable.

For recycled-content products, confirm the exact resin, recycled-content percentage, source description, and finished package. A resin identification code identifies the material; it does not guarantee that a package will be accepted or recycled locally.

Design for Required Performance and Material Efficiency

Eco-design decisions may include reducing unnecessary material, selecting a package size appropriate for the product, avoiding components that are not required, and evaluating whether components can be separated. These choices must be balanced with product protection, closure performance, labeling space, transportation, storage, and applicable regulations.

Customization can change the finished package. Inks, labels, adhesives, coatings, and laminations should be evaluated separately, and claims should be limited to documented attributes of the exact materials selected.

Evaluate Manufacturing and Transportation Separately

Manufacturing origin varies by Sana Packaging product and component. A domestic supplier, warehouse, or customization step does not establish that every component was made in the United States. Manufacturing-location and environmental claims require separate, product-specific documentation.

Package weight, case count, pallet efficiency, shipment distance, freight mode, and breakage or damage can affect a packaging program. A shorter shipping distance alone does not prove a lower carbon footprint.

Plan for the Actual End-of-Life Pathway

Recycling and disposal depend on the package format, attached components, residue, and local collection and processing infrastructure. Design intentions should be translated into clear, supportable instructions for the finished package and the markets where it is sold.

Verify Current Product Information

Current Sana Packaging product pages and product-specific FAQs are the sources of truth for exact material composition, manufacturing origin, child-resistance status, food-contact information, order quantities, customization, and other specifications.

Review current packaging options and Sana Packaging’s FAQ. If the required information is not published for the exact configuration, contact Sana Packaging before ordering or making a downstream claim.
