Over Half a Million Pounds of Ocean-Bound Plastic Reclaimed

We launched our first reclaimed ocean-bound plastic cannabis packaging product in 2019. Today, we produce six ocean-bound plastic products and we’ve reclaimed over 550,000 lbs of ocean-bound plastic. 

That’s right – with the help of our incredible customers, Sana Packaging has diverted and reclaimed over half a million pounds of ocean-bound plastic. You can read the press release here.

What is Ocean-Bound Plastic

Ocean-bound plastic is defined as plastic waste within 50 kilometers of the coast that has escaped traditional waste streams and entered the environment. This also includes plastic waste that has made its way to the coastline, waterways, nearshore, and deep sea.

We view ocean-bound plastic as a stranded resource. On top of being post-consumer recycled material, our goal in using this stranded resource is to bolster the demand for ocean-bound plastic and the infrastructure required to remove this waste from the environment.

Half a Million Pounds Reclaimed

We love checking in on our impact metrics and we’re always so thankful to our customers because none of this would be possible without their support. Surpassing half a million pounds of ocean-bound plastic reclaimed is a huge milestone for Sana Packaging. 

That’s a Lot of Ocean-Bound Plastic 

550,000 lbs of ocean-bound plastic is over half a million pounds of material reclaimed, but that can be a difficult number to conceptualize. Let us help you visualize just how much 550,000 lbs of material really is. 

Half a million pounds of ocean-bound plastic reclaimed is equivalent to 138 cars. That’s a lot of cars, but perhaps cars aren’t the most fun comparison we can make. 

Half a million pounds of ocean-bound plastic reclaimed is equivalent to 157 hippos, 73 orca whales, 42 elephants, or 11 humpback whales. 

We’re excited for this number to keep growing as the cannabis industry continues to embrace more sustainable packaging solutions.
