We're excited to offer our customers an array of post-consumer recycled pre-roll tubes and bottles. These containers have pop-top child-resistant closures and are food-grade certified and FDA-compliant. The 100% post-consumer recycled plastic we are using is a pure PP (#5 recyclable). But what exactly does post-consumer recycled mean?
What Is Post-Consumer Recycled Material?
Post-consumer recycled content, also called PCR, is material that has been used by consumers, recycled, and repurposed into new products. PCR material can be found in many different types of packaging including glass, metal, paper, and plastic.
How does PCR work?
1. Consumers recycle items like plastic bottles, aluminum cans, cardboard boxes, and paper.
2. Local recycling programs collect the recyclables and transport them to recycling facilities.
3. The recyclables are sorted into bales by material type.
4. The bales are purchased and melted or ground into pellets.
5. The pellets are molded into new products, like packaging.
PCR is important because it reuses materials and reduces the need for new raw materials. It can also help reduce energy consumption and greenhouse gas emissions.
It's also important to note that recycling only works if there is a market for post-consumer recycled materials. From a financial perspective, the entire concept hinges on companies purchasing PCR material to make new products.
Whether you're an individual consumer, a small to mid-size business, or a corporation, one of the most impactful things you can do to support recycling is purchasing and using product made from PCR material.
PCR Versus Recycled
The main difference between post-consumer recycled content and recycled content is that PCR refers to materials that have been used by consumers and then recycled. PCR materials come from products that have reached the end of their life cycle and would have otherwise ended up in landfills. Recycled simply refers to materials that have been used and then repurposed.
Post-Consumer Recycled Versus Post-Industrial Recycled
Post-consumer and post-industrial are terms that refer to the origin of recycled materials, and they differ in a few key ways.
Origin of Material
Post-consumer recycled material (PCR) comes from products that have been used by consumers. Post-industrial recycled material (PIR) comes from waste generated during manufacturing.
Examples of PCR & PIR
Examples of PCR include used paper, cardboard, glass bottles, plastic containers, and metal cans. Examples of PIR include waste generated by production cuts or unused materials during the production line.
Recycling Process
Recycling PCR material can be difficult because it is often contaminated and contains a variety of materials that are difficult to separate. PCR materials can be less uniform in quality and composition than PIR materials, which are often more consistent and homogeneous. For this reason, products labeled PCR often contain a small percentage (as low as 1%) of PIR material.
Benefits & Applications
Using PCR materials helps generate the demand for consumer recycling programs by creating an end-market for recycled materials. PCR materials also divert materials from landfills and extend the life cycle of materials. PIR materials are crucial for products requiring high levels of control, quality, and consistency.
Both PCR and PIR are valuable recycling materials that are needed in a sustainable economy.
