Why Sana Packaging Developed the 4oz Ocean Jar

When Sana Packaging introduced the 4oz Ocean Jar in 2021, the goal was to give cannabis brands another option for rigid flower packaging.

The package needed to provide a familiar jar format while reducing reliance on virgin plastic for the jar body. It also needed to fit into an existing packaging system that could support compatible closures, labels, tamper-evident features, and commercial filling processes.

The result was a lightweight 4oz jar made in the United States from 100% reclaimed ocean-bound high-density polyethylene, or HDPE.

The 4oz Ocean Jar remains part of Sana Packaging’s current rigid-packaging lineup. It can accommodate up to approximately 7g of cannabis flower and may also be suitable for compatible edibles and topicals.

Add Another Rigid Option for Cannabis Flower

No single package format is appropriate for every cannabis flower product or brand.

Glass jars, plastic containers, pop-top bottles, hemp plastic containers, and flexible pouches offer different combinations of weight, presentation, closures, materials, customization, storage, and transportation characteristics.

The 4oz Ocean Jar was developed as a lightweight rigid option for brands that wanted to incorporate reclaimed material into the package body.

It was not designed to make every other jar format unnecessary. A recycled glass jar may provide a different appearance and customer experience. A pop-top bottle includes a different closure system. A flexible pouch has different filling, storage, and merchandising characteristics.

The best format depends on the actual flower, filling process, closure requirements, intended market, retail presentation, and complete packaging system.

Use Reclaimed Material in a Familiar Jar Format

The 4oz Ocean Jar body is made from 100% reclaimed ocean-bound HDPE.

Using reclaimed plastic as a manufacturing input can reduce the need for virgin plastic in the component to which the claim applies. The claim should remain specific to the jar body and not automatically extend to the lid, liner, label, adhesive, tamper band, or outer packaging.

The jar body is made of #2 HDPE and is recyclable where accepted. Local collection and processing programs vary, and attached components or residual product can affect the available end-of-life pathway.

The jar should not be described as biodegradable or compostable. Recycled content, recyclability, biodegradability, and compostability are separate material characteristics.

Responsible material selection is one part of the packaging decision. The finished package must still work with the product, closure, filling operation, storage conditions, transportation process, labeling, and applicable market requirements.

Treat the Jar and Lid as a Complete Packaging System

The 4oz Ocean Jar is the container body. It does not include a lid and is not child-resistant on its own.

The jar has a 53-400 neck finish and pairs with a compatible 53mm Ocean Screw-Top Lid, which is sold separately. When the jar is paired with the appropriate documented child-resistant closure, it can become part of a child-resistant package.

The complete configuration can include:

• The 4oz Ocean Jar.
• A compatible 53-400 lid.
• The selected liner.
• A label or other decoration.
• A tamper-evident component when required.
• Any paperboard outer packaging.
• Required warnings, product information, and opening instructions.

Child resistance and tamper evidence are separate functions. A child-resistant lid does not automatically provide visible evidence that the package has been opened, and a tamper-evident band or label does not make a package child-resistant.

Changing the jar, lid, liner, label, or another component may affect how the complete package performs. The intended configuration should be tested and reviewed before a production order is approved.

Use Capacity as a Starting Point

The 4oz Ocean Jar can hold up to approximately 7g of cannabis flower, but that capacity should be treated as a planning reference rather than a guaranteed fill amount.

Flower can vary in density, moisture content, dimensions, and structure. Two products with the same nominal weight may occupy different amounts of space.

Testing should confirm:

• Whether the product enters the jar without unnecessary compression.
• Whether the intended fill leaves suitable headspace.
• Whether flower interferes with the lid or liner.
• Whether the completed package maintains the intended presentation.
• Whether the package works with the filling and labeling process.
• How it performs during storage, case-packing, and transportation.
• How customers open, close, store, and remove the product.
