Plant-Based Hemp Plastic Cannabis Packaging FAQs

Answers to the most common questions about our Plant-Based Hemp Plastic Cannabis Packaging

What types of plant-based hemp plastic packaging does Sana Packaging offer?

Sana Packaging offers wholesale plant-based hemp plastic packaging for pre-rolls, vape cartridges, vape pens, cannabis flower, concentrates, edibles, and other compatible products.

Current options include:

• 78mm Hemp Tubes for mini pre-rolls and many compatible vape cartridges

• 110mm Hemp Tubes for king-size pre-rolls and compatible vape pens

• Sana Hemp Containers, a 27.5-dram format for cannabis flower and other compatible products

• Compatible labels, printing, inner baggies, tamper-evident components, inserts, and paperboard packaging

These products are made in the USA from a plant-based hemp plastic biocomposite and stocked in their natural brown color.

The plant-based and petroleum-free claims apply to the molded hemp plastic component. Labels, inks, adhesives, liners, seals, tamper bands, inner baggies, inserts, and secondary packaging may contain different materials.

Dimensions, capacities, closures, case quantities, customization options, inventory, and lead times vary by product.

Which plant-based hemp plastic package should I choose?

Choose the package based on the product type, complete product dimensions, target fill weight, desired headspace, closure requirements, retail presentation, customization method, and budget.

Common starting points include:

• 78mm Hemp Tube for mini pre-rolls and many compatible 0.5g and 1g vape cartridges

• 110mm Hemp Tube for king-size pre-rolls and compatible vape pens measuring up to approximately 10 centimeters long

• Sana Hemp Container for up to approximately 3.5g of cannabis flower

• Sana Hemp Container as rigid outer packaging for compatible edibles, concentrates, and vape cartridges

• Sana Hemp Container paired with a compatible Compostable Film Baggie when an additional inner layer is appropriate

The Sana Hemp Container’s sliding lid can also be used as a rolling tray.

Product weight or nominal hardware capacity alone does not determine package fit. Product density, complete dimensions, desired headspace, closure engagement, filling method, and manufacturing tolerances can change the required package.

Test the complete product and packaging configuration before placing a production order.

What is Sana Packaging’s plant-based hemp plastic packaging made from?

Sana Packaging’s hemp plastic is a fiber-reinforced biocomposite made from approximately:

• 70% plant-derived polylactic acid, or PLA

• 30% micronized hemp hurd

• Biobased binders used to combine the materials

The documented molded material is 100% plant-based and petroleum-free.

It is not made entirely from hemp. “Plant-based hemp plastic,” “hemp plastic biocomposite,” and “PLA-and-hemp biocomposite” accurately describe the material.

The composition applies only to the documented molded hemp plastic component. Separately manufactured labels, inks, adhesives, liners, seals, tamper bands, inner baggies, inserts, and paperboard packaging should be described according to their own material specifications.

For more detailed composition, processing, end-of-life, and material-claims guidance, explore the Plant-Based Hemp Plastic FAQ.

What are the benefits and tradeoffs of plant-based hemp plastic packaging?

Plant-based hemp plastic provides an alternative to rigid packaging made from virgin petroleum-based plastic.

Product attributes include:

• Molded material that is 100% plant-based and petroleum-free

• Approximately 30% micronized hemp hurd

• Rigid and reusable package formats

• Certified child-resistant package designs

• A distinctive natural brown appearance

• Domestic manufacturing

• Printing, labeling, and secondary-packaging options

• Compatibility with pre-rolls, flower, vape hardware, and other eligible products

Tradeoffs include:

• A current standard line limited to three stock formats

• One standard stock color

• Possible variation in color, tone, texture, or surface appearance

• Finished packages that are not certified compostable

• Limited acceptance by conventional recycling and composting programs

• Package performance that depends on the complete design rather than the material alone

• Additional packaging components that may use different materials

Plant-based content does not make a package plastic-free, chemical-free, zero-waste, certified compostable, recyclable everywhere, or environmentally impact-free.

Evaluate the complete packaging system and its expected lifecycle rather than relying on one material attribute.

Is Sana Packaging’s plant-based hemp plastic packaging child-resistant?

Sana Packaging offers certified child-resistant hemp plastic packaging, but child resistance comes from the tested package design, dimensions, closure, and opening mechanism rather than the material itself.

Current child-resistant options include:

• 78mm Hemp Tube with a certified two-piece locking mechanism

• 110mm Hemp Tube with a certified two-piece locking mechanism

• Sana Hemp Container with a certified pinch-and-slide closure

Labels, liners, inner baggies, seals, tamper bands, inserts, and paperboard boxes do not provide child resistance on their own.

Changing a package dimension, closure, opening mechanism, liner, or another tested element may affect certification or require additional testing.

Child-resistant does not mean child-proof. Request current certification documentation and confirm the applicable requirements in every market where the finished product will be sold.

Is plant-based hemp plastic packaging food-grade and FDA-compliant?

Plant-based composition alone does not establish food-contact suitability or FDA compliance.

Food-contact suitability is product-specific and can depend on:

• Material formulation

• PLA and hemp feedstock

• Binders, colorants, and additives

• Manufacturing process

• Package format

• Closure

• Liner or seal

• Labels, inks, and adhesives

• Intended contents

• Contact time and temperature

• Filling, storage, and transportation conditions

Sana Packaging’s hemp plastic specification sheets provide links to product-specific material documentation and attestations.

Request current documentation for the exact package, component, intended contents, filling conditions, and conditions of use before making a food-contact claim.

Use “food-grade” or “FDA-compliant” only when supported by the applicable product-specific documentation. The term FDA-compliant should not be interpreted as FDA-approved.

Is hemp plastic packaging airtight, odor-resistant, moisture-resistant, leakproof, or tamper-evident?

Performance depends on the complete package, including its material, dimensions, wall construction, closure, manufacturing tolerances, intended product, and conditions of use.

Plant-based hemp plastic packaging should not automatically be described as fully airtight, odor-proof, moisture-proof, waterproof, leakproof, or watertight.

Performance can depend on:

• Package format and wall construction

• Closure design and operation

• Manufacturing tolerances

• Liner or sealing system

• Product formulation and fill level

• Filling process and temperature

• Package orientation

• Storage and transportation conditions

• Repeated opening and closing

• Product-to-package compatibility

The Sana Hemp Container can be paired with a compatible Compostable Film Baggie when an additional inner layer is appropriate. The container and baggie are separate components with different material and end-of-life attributes.

Tamper evidence is also a separate packaging function. Hemp plastic packaging may require a compatible tamper band, label, seal, sealed outer package, or another feature when visible evidence of opening is required.

Test the complete filled package under the expected conditions for filling, storage, transportation, retail, and use before production.

How should buyers handle end-of-life guidance for Sana Packaging’s hemp-plastic products?

Sana Packaging’s molded hemp-plastic products are not certified compostable and generally are not compatible with conventional plastic recycling streams. Before providing disposal instructions, confirm whether a local specialty program expressly accepts PLA-and-hemp biocomposites. If no appropriate recovery program is available, follow applicable local waste-disposal requirements.

What colors and appearance are available?

Current plant-based hemp plastic products are stocked in their natural brown color.

Because the material contains micronized hemp fiber, slight variations may occur in:

• Color

• Tone

• Texture

• Surface appearance

• Production consistency

These variations are characteristic of the material and do not automatically indicate a performance problem.

Custom colors are not currently offered as a standard option for hemp plastic products. Labels and printing can add full-color branding while retaining the package’s natural material appearance.

Request physical samples when color consistency, surface appearance, printing, labeling, or retail presentation is critical.

Can I order customized plant-based hemp plastic packaging?

Yes. Available customization options can include:

• Pressure-sensitive labels

• Label printing and application

• Digital printing

• Pad printing

• Direct printing on eligible surfaces

• Lid labels and printing for the Sana Hemp Container

• Three-panel wraparound labels for the Sana Hemp Container

• Customizable Stone Paper Tamper Bands

• Custom paperboard boxes or inserts

• Compliance and product-information labeling

Direct-print templates are available for the 78mm and 110mm Hemp Tubes and for the Sana Hemp Container lid.

Use the product-specific template for the exact package and customization method because printable areas vary. A digital proof is provided for approval before applicable custom production begins.

Labels, inks, adhesives, coatings, liners, seals, inner baggies, and tamper bands may change the composition and end-of-life considerations of the complete package. Material claims about the molded hemp plastic component should not automatically be applied to added components.

Available printing methods, minimum quantities, artwork requirements, lead times, and pricing vary by product and customization method.
