Add-Ons FAQ

Add-Ons & Accessories

What are cannabis packaging add-ons?

Cannabis packaging add-ons are components used with a primary container to improve organization, tamper evidence, product protection, presentation, branding, or filling and packing workflows.

Depending on the package, an add-on may:

  • Organize multiple pre-rolls
  • Provide visible evidence of opening
  • Add an inner product-contact layer
  • Hold products in a specific orientation
  • Improve retail presentation
  • Add branding or product information
  • Support a complete packaging configuration

An add-on does not automatically make a package child-resistant, tamper-evident, airtight, recyclable, compostable, or compliant. Those attributes depend on the exact component and complete packaging system.

Which cannabis packaging add-ons does Sana Packaging offer?

Current options include:

  • Paper inserts for the 90mm Ocean Pre-Roll Multipack
  • Plastic inserts for the 114mm Pre-Roll Multipack Slider Tin
  • Customizable Stone Paper Tamper Bands
  • Compostable Film Baggies and Pouches
  • Custom paperboard displays for compatible 9ml concentrate jars
  • Labels, printing, seals, and custom paperboard components available through qualifying projects

Sana Packaging also offers empty pre-rolled cones made from organic hemp paper or hemp wraps. Pre-rolled cones are product components rather than finished retail packaging and are covered in the Pre-Rolled Cones FAQ.

Products, compatibility, dimensions, materials, colors, case quantities, customization options, inventory, and lead times vary by item.

Which add-on works with which package?

Current product-specific pairings include:

  • Paper insert with the 90mm Ocean Pre-Roll Multipack
  • Plastic insert with the 114mm Pre-Roll Multipack Slider Tin
  • Compostable Film Baggie with the Sana Hemp Container or another appropriately tested outer package
  • Custom paperboard display with compatible 9ml concentrate jars
  • Stone Paper Tamper Band with compatible jars, lids, bottles, tubes, and other packages that match the band dimensions

Some add-ons are designed for one specific package. Others can work with multiple packages when the dimensions, application area, materials, and intended use are compatible.

Do not assume compatibility based only on product category or nominal package size. Request samples and test the complete configuration before production.

Are add-ons included with the primary packaging?

Add-ons are generally ordered separately unless the product listing or quote expressly states that they are included.

For example:

  • Paper inserts are sold separately from the 90mm Ocean Pre-Roll Multipack.
  • Plastic inserts are sold separately from the 114mm Pre-Roll Multipack Slider Tin.
  • Compostable Film Baggies are sold separately from the Sana Hemp Container.
  • Stone Paper Tamper Bands are separate from the package to which they are applied.
  • Custom paperboard displays are separate from the concentrate jars they hold.
  • Empty pre-rolled cones are sold separately from retail packaging.

Review the product listing, sample request, proof, and quote to confirm that every included and separately required component is included.

Why should I use a pre-roll multipack insert?

A multipack insert can organize pre-rolls, maintain spacing, control orientation, and improve the opening and presentation experience.

An insert may help:

  • Separate individual pre-rolls
  • Reduce movement within the package
  • Maintain an intended layout
  • Support consistent filling and packing
  • Present products in rows or designated positions
  • Reduce direct contact between compatible products
  • Create space for multiple varieties or product configurations

An insert does not make the package child-resistant, tamper-evident, airtight, or compliant on its own.

The insert also reduces or changes the available interior space. Test the complete package, including the actual finished pre-rolls and the intended insert, before production.

What is the difference between the paper and plastic multipack inserts?

The paper insert is designed for the 90mm Ocean Pre-Roll Multipack.

Current specifications include:

  • Black paper construction
  • Adhesive-backed installation
  • Capacity for up to five compatible pre-rolls measuring approximately 85mm or less
  • 500 inserts per case

The plastic insert is designed for the 114mm Pre-Roll Multipack Slider Tin.

Current specifications include:

  • Molded plastic construction
  • Black or white stock colors
  • Capacity for up to five compatible 109mm, approximately 1g pre-rolls
  • 200 inserts per case

These capacities are starting points rather than guarantees. Finished pre-roll diameter, filter size, wrap thickness, fill density, finishing method, orientation, and manufacturing tolerances can affect fit.

Can I use an insert with a different package or pre-roll size?

Product-specific inserts should not be assumed to fit other packages.

Compatibility can depend on:

  • Interior package length, width, and depth
  • Wall taper and corner radius
  • Closure clearance
  • Insert material and thickness
  • Adhesive placement
  • Finished pre-roll length and diameter
  • Desired product count and orientation
  • Filling and assembly method
  • Manufacturing tolerances

Using an insert from a different package may cause excessive movement, compression, closure interference, or an unstable presentation.

Custom inserts may be available for qualifying projects. Provide the exact package, internal dimensions, finished product dimensions, desired count, orientation, material preference, and order quantity when requesting a custom recommendation.

What is a tamper-evident band, and how does it work?

A tamper-evident band is applied across a closure or opening area so that opening the package breaks, tears, or visibly disrupts the band.

Sana Packaging’s Stone Paper Tamper Bands include perforations intended to create visible evidence of opening.

Effective performance depends on:

  • Correct band size
  • Package and closure dimensions
  • Application location
  • Surface shape and texture
  • Adhesive compatibility
  • Package cleanliness
  • Application pressure
  • Filling and storage conditions
  • Customer opening method

A tamper band does not prevent every form of access or alteration. Test the applied band on the filled package under expected storage, transportation, retail, and use conditions.

Is a tamper-evident band the same as child-resistant packaging?

No. Tamper evidence and child resistance are separate packaging functions.

A tamper-evident feature provides visible evidence that a package may have been opened or altered.

Child-resistant packaging uses a tested design and opening mechanism intended to make it difficult for young children to open while remaining accessible to adults.

Applying a tamper band does not make a non-child-resistant package child-resistant. A child-resistant package may still require a separate tamper-evident feature.

Confirm both requirements for the complete retail packaging system in every market where the finished product will be sold.

What are Stone Paper Tamper Bands made from?

Current Stone Paper Tamper Bands are made from approximately:

  • 80% calcium carbonate
  • 20% polyethylene

The bands are durable, water-resistant, and perforated. Current printed production is completed in Colorado using wind-powered electricity.

“Stone Paper” does not mean the band is made entirely from stone or conventional paper. The bands contain polyethylene and should not be described as plastic-free, biodegradable, or compostable.

Material, manufacturing, and environmental claims should apply only to the documented band. Confirm current specifications before using those claims in marketing or compliance materials.

How do I determine whether a tamper band will fit my package?

Current Stone Paper Tamper Bands have an approximate finished size of:

  • 0.25 inches wide
  • 2 inches long

They can fit many compatible jars, lids, pop-top bottles, pre-roll tubes, and other packages, but fit depends on the exact configuration.

Evaluate:

  • Container and closure dimensions
  • Distance the band must span
  • Curvature and taper
  • Application surface
  • Opening direction
  • Required perforation position
  • Label or artwork interference
  • Filling and capping tolerances
  • Manual or automated application
  • Storage and transportation conditions

Test samples on the complete filled and closed package. The band should remain attached during normal handling, but break or visibly change when the package is opened as intended.

Can Stone Paper Tamper Bands be applied by hand or with equipment?

Stone Paper Tamper Bands can be applied by hand or evaluated for compatible labeling and application equipment.

Manual application may be appropriate for smaller production runs. Equipment can improve placement consistency and throughput for qualifying higher-volume projects.

When evaluating an application process, consider:

  • Band dimensions and roll configuration
  • Package shape and orientation
  • Application speed
  • Label sensor compatibility
  • Peel and dispensing behavior
  • Surface cleanliness
  • Placement tolerance
  • Adhesive pressure
  • Perforation alignment
  • Operator access
  • Filled-package stability

Run production-line testing before committing to an automated workflow. Equipment compatibility should be confirmed with the equipment manufacturer or integrator.

Can Stone Paper Tamper Bands be custom printed?

Yes. Stock and custom-printed Stone Paper Tamper Bands are available.

Current artwork dimensions include:

  • Finished size: Approximately 0.25 by 2 inches
  • Bleed area: Approximately 0.35 by 2.1 inches
  • Safety area: Approximately 0.15 by 1.9 inches

The narrow format and perforations limit the amount and placement of readable content.

In general, production artwork should:

  • Use the current product-specific template
  • Use vector artwork when possible
  • Outline fonts
  • Embed linked images
  • Extend backgrounds through the required bleed
  • Keep important content inside the safety area
  • Account for perforations and application tolerances
  • Identify specialty colors or production requirements

A digital proof is provided for approval before applicable custom production begins. For more guidance on artwork, explore the Printing & Labeling FAQ.

What are Compostable Film Baggies made from, and what can they hold?

Sana Packaging’s Compostable Film Baggies are made from cellulose derived from responsibly managed forest sources.

Current sourcing documentation references:

  • Forest Stewardship Council, or FSC
  • Programme for the Endorsement of Forest Certification, or PEFC

Current approximate dimensions are:

  • 2.5 inches wide
  • 1.25 inches deep
  • 5.25 inches tall

The baggies can hold approximately 3.5g of cannabis flower or compatible edibles and other products, depending on product density, dimensions, fill level, and desired headspace.

They can also be used as an optional inner layer with the Sana Hemp Container.

Capacity is not guaranteed by nominal weight alone. Test the actual product, filling process, sealing, and outer packaging before production.

Are Compostable Film Baggies food-grade, heat-sealable, child-resistant, or airtight?

Current Compostable Film Baggies are food-grade, FDA-compliant for applicable product-contact uses, and heat-sealable.

They are not child-resistant on their own.

Actual package performance depends on:

  • Product formulation
  • Fill weight and headspace
  • Seal temperature, pressure, and dwell time
  • Sealing equipment
  • Seal width and consistency
  • Package orientation
  • Storage temperature and humidity
  • Transportation conditions
  • Outer packaging
  • Repeated handling
  • Product-to-film compatibility

Do not automatically describe the baggies as fully airtight, odor-proof, moisture-proof, waterproof, leakproof, or shelf-life extending.

Request current food-contact and material documentation. Validate the complete filled and sealed package under expected conditions before making performance claims.

How should Compostable Film Baggies be disposed of?

The current film is described as certified compostable, but compostability does not mean every collection or composting program will accept the finished baggie.

Before making a compostability claim, confirm:

  • The current certification
  • The applicable standard
  • The environment covered by the certification
  • Any required preparation
  • Whether inks, labels, adhesives, seals, or residual product affect acceptance
  • Whether an appropriate local program is available

FSC and PEFC documentation addresses forest sourcing. It does not, by itself, establish compostability.

Do not place the baggie in curbside recycling unless the receiving program expressly accepts the complete construction. Do not discard it in the environment.

Follow the instructions of the applicable local composting or waste-management program. For broader guidance on materials, explore Sustainability.

Which custom paperboard display formats are available?

Current custom paperboard displays are designed for compatible 9ml concentrate jars.

Available starting formats include:

  • Six-count narrow display
  • Six-count wide display
  • Twelve-count display

Choose the format based on:

  • Exact jar and closure
  • Desired product count
  • Label dimensions
  • Product orientation
  • Retail shelf space
  • Branding area
  • Display stability
  • Packing and transportation requirements

A display organizes and presents the jars but does not replace the primary product-contact package, closure, child-resistant mechanism, liner, seal, or required labeling.

Test the complete display with the filled and closed jars before production.

What materials and printing options are available for custom displays?

Current custom displays use 18-point paperboard.

Available material constructions include:

  • Approximately 30% hemp fiber and 70% post-consumer waste
  • 100% post-consumer waste paperboard

One-sided full-color printing is included for current qualifying display projects.

Current printing uses TÜV-certified home-compostable inks. That certification applies to the documented ink and should not automatically be applied to the complete printed display.

Finished-display end-of-life options can depend on:

  • Paperboard construction
  • Ink coverage
  • Coatings
  • Adhesives
  • Residual product
  • Added labels or components
  • Local collection and processing requirements

Use the current product-specific dieline. Artwork should include the required bleed and safety areas, outlined fonts, embedded images, and separate artwork and dieline layers.

A digital proof is provided for approval before applicable production begins.

What are the case quantities, custom minimums, and lead times?

Current standard quantities include:

  • Paper multipack inserts: 500 per case
  • Plastic multipack inserts: 200 per case
  • Compostable Film Baggies: 1,000 per case
  • Stone Paper Tamper Bands: 4,000 per roll
  • Empty pre-rolled cones: 800 or 900 per case, depending on the product
  • Custom paperboard displays: Generally 250 units per format, material, and design

Blank, in-stock products generally ship the next business day.

Custom Stone Paper Tamper Bands generally require approximately 3 to 10 business days after final proof approval. Custom paperboard displays generally require approximately 10 to 14 business days after final proof approval.

Timing can vary with quantity, artwork readiness, number of designs, proof revisions, production capacity, shipping, and freight.

Samples are available for many current products. Confirm inventory, minimums, case quantities, pricing, proofing requirements, and lead times for the exact item before ordering.
