Pre-Roll Packaging FAQ

Pre-Roll Packaging

What types of pre-roll packaging does Sana Packaging offer?

Sana Packaging offers wholesale pre-roll packaging for mini pre-rolls, standard pre-rolls, king-size joints, blunts, infused pre-rolls, and multipacks.

Available formats include:

  • Individual pre-roll tubes
  • Pop-top pre-roll multipacks
  • Clamshell pre-roll multipacks
  • Glass multipack jars
  • Aluminum slider tins
  • Customizable flexible pouches
  • Paper and plastic multipack inserts
  • Tamper-evident bands, labels, seals, and outer packaging

Current materials include post-consumer recycled plastic, reclaimed ocean-bound plastic, plant-based hemp plastic, glass, aluminum, flexible films, and paperboard.

Sana Packaging also offers empty pre-rolled cones made from organic hemp paper or hemp wraps. Pre-rolled cones are product components rather than finished retail packages and are covered in the Pre-Rolled Cones FAQ.

Products, dimensions, materials, colors, closures, case quantities, customization options, inventory, and lead times vary by item.

Should I choose a tube, multipack, jar, tin, or flexible pouch?

Choose the format based on the finished pre-roll dimensions, unit count, desired protection, closure requirements, filling process, retail presentation, customization goals, order quantity, budget, and sales market.

Common starting points include:

  • Individual pre-roll tube: Rigid packaging for one pre-roll, blunt, or compatible vape product
  • Pop-top or clamshell multipack: Rigid packaging for several pre-rolls with an integrated closure
  • Glass multipack jar: Rigid, premium presentation for mini pre-rolls or higher-count configurations
  • Aluminum slider tin: Slim multipack format that supports different pre-roll sizes and orientations
  • Flexible pouch: Lightweight packaging with custom dimensions, printed film, and multiple closure options
  • Paperboard outer package: Additional branding, product information, light protection, or retail presentation
  • Multipack insert: Organizes and separates pre-rolls inside a compatible outer package

Individual tubes are compact and easy to merchandise. Multipacks, jars, tins, and pouches provide more room for branding and can support variety packs, infused collections, multi-SKU assortments, and larger-count products.

No single format is appropriate for every pre-roll. Test the complete package with the finished product before placing a production order.

Which tube size is right for my pre-roll?

Common pre-roll tube size ranges include:

  • 78mm: Mini pre-rolls and many compatible 0.5g formats
  • 90mm: Shorter pre-rolls, one or two compatible 0.5g pre-rolls, or two compatible 0.3g pre-rolls
  • 110mm: King-size pre-rolls and many compatible 1g formats
  • 115mm, 116mm, and 120mm: King-size pre-rolls, larger pre-rolls, blunts, and other compatible products

The package name or nominal length does not always represent the usable interior length.

Pre-roll fit can depend on:

  • Finished length
  • Widest diameter
  • Filter or crutch dimensions
  • Cone or wrap thickness
  • Fill density
  • Twist, fold, or finishing method
  • Desired headspace
  • Package taper
  • Closure depth
  • Manufacturing tolerances

Nominal fill weight alone does not determine package fit. Measure the complete finished pre-roll and test it in a physical sample.

How many pre-rolls fit in Sana Packaging’s multipacks?

Capacity depends on the finished pre-roll dimensions and the package configuration.

Current starting points include:

  • 90mm Ocean Pre-Roll Multipack: Five pre-rolls measuring up to approximately 85mm each
  • 116mm PCR Pop-Top Pre-Roll Multipack: Up to five 109mm, approximately 1g pre-rolls
  • 90mm Glass Pre-Roll Multipack Jar: Up to ten 84mm, approximately 0.5g pre-rolls or twelve 70mm mini pre-rolls
  • 114mm Pre-Roll Multipack Slider Tin: Up to eight 109mm, approximately 1g pre-rolls vertically or fourteen 70mm, approximately 0.5g pre-rolls horizontally

These capacities are guidelines rather than guarantees.

Paper type, wrap thickness, filter diameter, fill density, finishing method, desired spacing, and manufacturing tolerances can change the final count. Inserts also affect the usable space and required orientation.

Test the complete multipack, including the actual pre-rolls and any intended inserts, before production.

What measurements should I provide when requesting a pre-roll package recommendation?

Provide measurements of the complete, finished pre-roll rather than relying solely on the cone size or target fill weight.

Useful information includes:

  • Finished pre-roll length
  • Widest outside diameter
  • Filter or crutch length and diameter
  • Twist, fold, or finished-tip length
  • Target fill weight
  • Desired pre-roll count
  • Required headspace
  • Preferred package orientation
  • Any variation between finished units
  • Dimensions of inserts or other internal components
  • Filling and labeling equipment requirements

For non-cylindrical products, provide the maximum length, width, and depth.

Physical samples may be needed when tolerances are narrow or when the product uses an unusual filter, mouthpiece, wrap, tip, or finishing method.

Can pre-roll tubes also hold vape cartridges or vape pens?

Yes. Select pre-roll tubes can accommodate compatible vape cartridges, pens, and other hardware.

Common starting points include:

  • 78mm Hemp and Ocean Tubes for many compatible 0.5g and 1g vape cartridges
  • 78mm PCR Pop-Top Tubes for many compatible vape cartridges
  • 110mm and 116mm tubes for select vape pens and longer hardware

Vape hardware dimensions vary significantly between manufacturers.

Test the complete cartridge, mouthpiece, battery, cap, and other components. Also evaluate internal movement, cushioning, orientation, temperature exposure, and the customer opening experience.

An outer tube cannot prevent leakage originating from the vape cartridge or its internal components.

Which materials are available for pre-roll packaging?

Current material options include:

  • Post-consumer recycled PP
  • Reclaimed ocean-bound PET
  • Reclaimed ocean-bound HDPE
  • Reclaimed ocean-bound PP
  • Plant-based hemp plastic
  • Standard and recycled-content glass
  • Aluminum
  • Standard and post-consumer recycled flexible-film constructions
  • Paperboard and hemp paperboard
  • Paper and plastic multipack inserts

The exact material is specified in the product specification and generally cannot be selected independently of the package.

Material selection can affect:

  • Rigidity and impact resistance
  • Weight
  • Appearance and product visibility
  • Closure design
  • Barrier performance
  • Surface texture
  • Printing and labeling
  • Transportation
  • Local recycling or disposal pathways
  • Minimum quantities and production timing

For additional material guidance, explore the Post-Consumer Recycled Materials FAQ, Ocean-Bound Plastic FAQ, and Plant-Based Hemp Plastic FAQ.

Is pre-roll packaging recyclable, biodegradable, or compostable?

It depends on the exact material, package format, added components, and available local recovery programs.

Current considerations include:

  • PET, HDPE, and PP packages are recyclable where accepted.
  • Glass packaging is recyclable where accepted.
  • Aluminum packaging is recyclable where accepted.
  • Flexible pouches may use multilayer film constructions that are not accepted by conventional curbside recycling programs.
  • Plant-based hemp plastic: Sana Packaging’s molded hemp-plastic tubes are not certified compostable and generally are not compatible with conventional plastic recycling streams. Check whether a local specialty program expressly accepts the PLA-and-hemp biocomposite.
  • Paperboard and inserts may be recyclable or compostable only when their exact construction and the receiving program support that pathway.

Recycled content, recyclability, biodegradability, and compostability describe different attributes. One claim does not establish the others.

Recycling and disposal can also depend on:

  • Package size and color
  • Closures and liners
  • Labels, inks, and adhesives
  • Inserts and tamper-evident components
  • Residual cannabis product
  • Component separation
  • Local collection and processing infrastructure

Do not place packaging in a recycling or composting program based only on general material terms. Follow the instructions of the applicable local program.

Use “recyclable where accepted” rather than “100% recyclable,” “infinitely recyclable,” or “recyclable everywhere.”

Is Sana Packaging’s pre-roll packaging child-resistant?

Sana Packaging offers child-resistant pre-roll packaging, but not every package or component is child-resistant.

Current child-resistant options include:

  • PCR pop-top pre-roll tubes
  • Reclaimed ocean-bound plastic pre-roll tubes
  • Plant-based hemp plastic pre-roll tubes
  • Glass pre-roll tubes paired with their specified child-resistant screw-top closures
  • Pop-top and clamshell pre-roll multipacks
  • Glass multipack jars paired with compatible child-resistant lids
  • Aluminum slider tins
  • Flexible pouches configured with documented child-resistant zippers

The 120mm Glass Pre-Roll Tube with a natural cork cap is not child-resistant.

Empty pre-rolled cones, multipack inserts, labels, tamper bands, seals, and paperboard outer packaging do not provide child resistance on their own.

Child resistance comes from the tested package design, dimensions, closure, opening mechanism, and complete configuration. Changing a tested element may affect certification or require additional testing.

Child-resistant does not mean child-proof. Request current certification documentation and confirm the requirements applicable to every market where the finished product will be sold.

Is pre-roll packaging food-grade and FDA-compliant?

Sana Packaging offers food-grade and FDA-compliant pre-roll packaging for applicable product-contact uses.

Food-contact suitability is product-specific and can depend on:

  • Package material
  • Recycled feedstock
  • Colorants and additives
  • Closure
  • Liner or seal
  • Film structure
  • Inks, labels, and adhesives
  • Intended contents
  • Contact time and temperature
  • Filling, storage, and transportation conditions

Request current documentation for the exact package, component, production configuration, and intended use.

The term FDA-compliant should not be interpreted as FDA-approved. Food-contact suitability also does not establish child resistance, tamper evidence, shelf life, or compliance with cannabis packaging regulations.

Is child-resistant packaging the same as tamper-evident packaging?

No. Child resistance and tamper evidence are separate packaging functions.

Child-resistant packaging is designed and tested to make opening difficult for young children while remaining accessible to adults.

Tamper-evident packaging provides visible evidence that the package may have been opened or altered after filling.

A child-resistant tube, jar, tin, multipack, or pouch may still require a separate tamper-evident feature.

Compatible options may include:

  • Perforated Stone Paper Tamper Bands
  • Tamper-evident labels or stickers
  • Liners or inner seals
  • Heat-sealed flexible-pouch tops
  • Sealed paperboard outer packaging
  • Other product-specific seals or closures

A tamper band, label, seal, insert, or outer box does not make a non-child-resistant package child-resistant.

Confirm both requirements for the complete packaging system before production.

Is pre-roll packaging airtight, odor-resistant, moisture-resistant, or leakproof?

Performance depends on the complete package rather than the general material category.

Pre-roll packaging should not automatically be described as fully airtight, odor-proof, smell-proof, moisture-proof, waterproof, leakproof, or watertight.

Performance can depend on:

  • Package material and wall construction
  • Film structure
  • Closure or zipper design
  • Liner or sealing system
  • Manufacturing tolerances
  • Product dimensions and fill level
  • Package orientation
  • Filling and sealing process
  • Storage and transportation conditions
  • Repeated opening and closing
  • Product-to-package compatibility

Rigid tubes, jars, tins, and multipacks can help protect pre-rolls from handling and environmental exposure. Flexible pouches can be configured with selected barrier films, zippers, and heat-sealable tops.

If freshness protection, aroma retention, humidity control, or long-term storage is critical, test the complete filled package under realistic conditions before making performance or shelf-life claims.

Are closures, lids, inserts, and pre-rolled cones included with the packaging?

It depends on the product.

Most plastic pre-roll tubes and multipacks have integrated closures.

Current examples include:

  • 115mm Glass Pre-Roll Tubes are sold as complete tube-and-closure sets with matching child-resistant screw-top lids.
  • 120mm Glass Pre-Roll Tubes are sold as complete tube-and-closure sets with natural cork caps.
  • 90mm Glass Pre-Roll Multipack Jars require compatible 38-400 lids, which are sold separately.
  • Paper inserts for the 90mm Ocean Pre-Roll Multipack are sold separately.
  • Plastic inserts for the 114mm Pre-Roll Multipack Slider Tin are sold separately.
  • Flexible-pouch zippers and sealing features are selected as part of the pouch construction.
  • Empty pre-rolled cones are sold separately from retail packaging.

No cannabis is included with the packaging or pre-rolled cones.

Review the product listing or quote to confirm every included and separately required component.

Can I request samples before ordering?

Yes. Samples are available for most current pre-roll packaging products.

Use samples to evaluate:

  • Finished pre-roll fit
  • Package capacity and desired headspace
  • Closure operation
  • Child resistance
  • Tamper-evident components
  • Inserts, liners, labels, and seals
  • Filling and labeling processes
  • Equipment compatibility
  • Storage and transportation
  • Customer opening and closing experience
  • Appearance and retail presentation

Test samples with the actual finished pre-roll rather than an empty cone whenever possible.

A physical sample can reveal fit, taper, closure, texture, and handling characteristics that may not be apparent from dimensions, photographs, templates, or digital proofs.

Can I purchase blank pre-roll packaging, and what are the minimum quantities?

Yes. Many blank, in-stock pre-roll packaging products can be purchased online in full-case quantities.

Current case quantities include:

  • 1,000 or 1,200 units per case for most plastic pre-roll tubes, depending on the product
  • 400 complete tube-and-closure sets per case for glass pre-roll tubes
  • 200 to 500 units per case for pre-roll multipacks, jars, and tins, depending on the format
  • 800 or 900 empty pre-rolled cones per case, depending on the size and material

Custom minimums depend on the package and production method.

Current examples include:

  • Custom flexible pouches: 5,000 total units, with at least 2,000 pouches per SKU or design
  • Custom colors for eligible rigid plastic packaging: Generally one pallet
  • In-mold labeling for eligible 90mm and 116mm pop-top projects: Generally one pallet, or approximately 36,000 units per design

Labels, direct printing, tins, cones, tamper bands, inserts, and paperboard projects have separate minimum quantities.

Confirm current inventory, case quantities, minimums, and pricing for the exact product before ordering.

What parts of pre-roll packaging can be customized?

Customization options can include:

  • Pressure-sensitive labels
  • Label printing and application
  • Digital or pad printing on eligible tubes
  • Direct printing on eligible packages
  • In-mold labeling for qualifying pop-top projects
  • Full-color printed flexible pouches
  • Full-color printing on eligible aluminum slider tins
  • Custom colors for eligible rigid plastic packaging
  • Customizable Stone Paper Tamper Bands
  • Paper or plastic multipack inserts
  • Custom paperboard boxes or sleeves
  • Compliance and product-information labeling
  • Custom-printed filter tips, wraps, and rolling paper for eligible cone projects

Not every method is compatible with every material, package shape, order quantity, or production schedule.

Select the package before finalizing artwork so the correct template, print area, and production requirements can be used.

What is the difference between labels, label application, direct printing, and in-mold labeling?

Pressure-sensitive labels provide a wide range of materials, finishes, shapes, and decoration options.

Label printing and application means the labels are printed and applied to the packaging before shipment. This can reduce vendors, production steps, and in-house labor so the packaging arrives ready to fill.

Direct printing places ink directly on an eligible package without a separate adhesive label. Available colors, print areas, registration, and minimum quantities depend on the product and printing process.

In-mold labeling integrates a printed label into an eligible molded package during production. It can provide durable, full-color graphics without a separately applied label but is limited to qualifying products and high-volume projects.

For more detailed guidance, explore the Printing & Labeling FAQ.

Do you provide templates and dielines for pre-roll packaging?

Yes. Product-specific label, direct-print, pouch, tin, insert, and paperboard templates are available for many pre-roll packaging products.

Always use the template for the exact product and customization method.

Packages that appear similar can have different:

  • Tapers
  • Printable areas
  • Label dimensions
  • Safety zones
  • Bleed requirements
  • Seams and folds
  • Closure clearances
  • Orientation requirements

Artwork placed on a flat rectangular layout can appear distorted or misaligned when applied to a tapered tube.

In general, production artwork should:

  • Use the required file format
  • Include outlined fonts
  • Include embedded images
  • Extend backgrounds through the specified bleed
  • Keep important content inside the safety area
  • Keep artwork and dielines on separate layers
  • Identify white ink, varnishes, metallic effects, and other specialty treatments
  • Account for seams, folds, tapers, zippers, closures, and application tolerances

A digital proof is provided for approval before applicable custom production begins. Physical samples are still recommended because a digital proof cannot fully represent package shape, texture, fit, or final color.

How much does custom pre-roll packaging cost?

Custom pricing depends on the full scope of the project.

Cost factors can include:

  • Package and material
  • Total quantity
  • Number of designs or SKUs
  • Quantity per design
  • Printing or labeling method
  • Number of colors
  • Label material and finish
  • Label application
  • Film structure
  • Zipper or closure
  • Inserts
  • Tamper-evident components
  • Setup and proofing
  • Paperboard packaging
  • Shipping and freight

Compare the complete finished packaging system rather than only the base container price.

For an accurate quote, provide the exact package, quantity, number of designs, customization requirements, artwork status, shipping destination, and required delivery date.

How long will my order take, and how do I get started?

Blank, in-stock pre-roll packaging generally ships the next business day.

Custom production timing depends on the package, quantity, printing method, number of designs, proof revisions, and project requirements.

Custom flexible pouches generally require approximately three weeks after final proof approval. Labels, label application, direct printing, custom colors, in-mold labeling, tins, inserts, and paperboard packaging have product-specific production schedules.

Artwork development, revisions, proof approval, shipping, and freight time may be additional to the stated production window.

To request samples, a recommendation, or a quote, provide:

  • Finished pre-roll dimensions
  • Target fill weight
  • Desired unit count
  • Preferred package format
  • Required headspace
  • Child-resistant and tamper-evident requirements
  • Preferred material
  • Total order quantity
  • Number of designs or SKUs
  • Printing and labeling requirements
  • Filling or equipment requirements
  • Sales market or jurisdiction
  • Target production and delivery dates
  • Required documentation

Final product compatibility testing, package testing, shelf-life testing, labeling review, environmental claims, and regulatory review remain the responsibility of the brand placing the finished product on the market.
