Flexible Packaging FAQ

Flexible Packaging

What products can I package in flexible pouches?

Our flexible pouches can be customized for cannabis flower, pre-rolls, concentrates, edibles, and outer packaging for vape cartridges. Stand-up and three-side-seal formats are available in standard and custom sizes.

Are flexible pouches the same as mylar bags?

“Mylar bag” is often used as a general term for flexible packaging, but it does not describe every pouch material or structure. We offer standard and post-consumer recycled film options selected according to your product, barrier requirements, appearance, features, and budget.

Are your flexible pouches recyclable, compostable, or biodegradable?

PCR pouch structures can contain up to 65% post-consumer recycled material. Recycled content does not necessarily make the finished pouch recyclable. Most multilayer flexible films are not accepted through curbside recycling programs, and our custom pouches are not compostable or biodegradable.

Separate compostable cellulose baggies are available for use as product liners.

Are your flexible pouches child-resistant and compliant?

Pouches configured with our child-resistant zipper are ASTM child-resistant certified. Standard zippers and no-zipper configurations are not child-resistant.

Many configurations include a heat-sealed top that must be torn open for tamper evidence. Customers are responsible for confirming that their finished packaging and labeling meet current local requirements.

What pouch sizes are available?

Standard sizes are available for products ranging from approximately 1g through 1oz, including 1/8oz, 1/4oz, and 1/2oz options. Custom dimensions and additional pouch formats are also available.

Product capacities are general guidelines. Finished dimensions, gussets, seals, zipper placement, and the packaged product can affect usable space. Review the current dieline and test a sample before production.

Can I request pouch samples before ordering?

Yes. We recommend testing samples with your product before ordering. This helps confirm capacity, product fit, closure performance, material feel, and shelf presentation.

Free unprinted, unlaminated samples are available for sizing purposes and typically ship within three days.

What is the minimum order quantity for custom pouches?

The minimum is 5,000 total pouches, with at least 2,000 pouches per SKU or design. Multiple SKUs can be combined in one order as long as each design meets the per-SKU minimum. For example, three designs would require at least 6,000 total pouches.

How much do custom flexible pouches cost?

Pricing depends on pouch size, total quantity, quantity per SKU, film structure, zipper, finish, printing method, and special features. PCR content, custom dimensions, windows, metallic effects, and other treatments can also affect pricing.

What parts of a flexible pouch can I customize?

Customization options include:

  • Standard or custom dimensions
  • Stand-up or three-side-seal construction
  • Child-resistant, standard, or no zipper
  • Tear notches and hang holes
  • Round or square corners
  • Gloss, matte, or soft-touch matte finishes
  • Full-color digital or flexographic printing
  • Spot UV, metallic effects, and other specialty treatments
  • Clear windows and printing inside the pouch

Some features are not compatible with every material or pouch structure. We will help you determine which options work together.

Can my pouches include clear windows or metallic effects?

Yes. Clear, cloudy, and crystal-clear window options are available with compatible film structures. Matte films can create a frosted window, while opaque white and metalized structures cannot produce a transparent window.

Metallic effects are generally created by printing over metalized film and selectively removing the white ink beneath the desired areas. Your artwork must clearly identify all windows, metallic elements, and white-ink separations.

Do I need finished artwork or a dieline to request a quote?

No. You can request a quote before your artwork is complete. We will need your estimated quantity, number of SKUs, quantity per SKU, pouch size, material, zipper, finish, and desired features.

Templates are available for standard sizes. If you have a pouch or dieline you want to match, upload it with your RFQ. Submit a separate RFQ for each desired pouch size.

How should I prepare my pouch artwork?

Always use the approved template for your specific pouch. Artwork should:

  • Be submitted as an Adobe Illustrator or high-quality PDF file
  • Use CMYK color mode
  • Include outlined fonts and embedded images
  • Use raster images with a minimum resolution of 300 dpi
  • Keep artwork and the dieline on separate layers
  • Extend backgrounds through the required bleed
  • Keep important content inside the safety area
  • Save each SKU or design as a separate file
  • Clearly identify white ink, windows, and metallic areas

Artwork for child-resistant pouches must include the required opening instructions. Follow the exact bleed, seal, zipper, gusset, and safety areas shown on your final size-specific dieline.

How does the pouch proofing process work?

The prepress and PDF proof fee is $175 per SKU. This covers prepress setup, artwork review, and PDF proofing. The PDF proof confirms layout, content, separations, and feature placement, but it is not an exact color representation.

Production begins after final proof approval.

What is the lead time for custom pouches?

Typical production lead time is approximately three weeks from final proof approval. Timing may vary based on pouch configuration, quantity, production scheduling, and project requirements.

Artwork preparation, prepress review, proof revisions, custom dieline development, and shipping are not included in the production window.

Will I receive the exact quantity I order?

Custom pouch orders are subject to a production overrun or underrun of 10–20%, as stated in your order terms. Because pouches are printed and converted in production runs, an exact finished quantity cannot be guaranteed.

For example, an order for 5,000 pouches with a 20% tolerance may produce between 4,000 and 6,000 finished pouches. You will be invoiced for the actual quantity produced.

Shipping is calculated after production based on the finished quantity and weight. Final quantity adjustments and shipping must be paid before the pouches are released.

How do I order custom flexible pouches?

Submit a Pouch RFQ with your quantity, number of SKUs, quantity per SKU, pouch dimensions, material, zipper, finish, features, and artwork if available. Submit a separate RFQ for each desired pouch size.
